REFLECTIONS ON BLACK HISTORY MONTH

James Baldwin is one of my favorite writers. Baldwin is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers and critical thinkers in U.S. history. One of my favorite quotes from his 1972 nonfiction book No Name in the Street is: “It is certain, in any case, that ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have.”

We all have heard that Black History is American history. This month, we honor both the known heroes and unsung heroes who chose dignity over fear and freedom over oppression. We remember the marches, courtroom cases, sit-ins, and violent assaults that are a part of America’s history. America’s real history.

In 2025, I participated in the 60th anniversary of the Selma March. While crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, I reflected on the people who were beaten on that Sunday in 1965. Their sacrifices, courage, and hope for a better America encourage me to work for a better America as well.

I encourage you during this Black History Month to share your history and your family's history with family members in generations behind you. Re-read Black biographies and Black novels that encourage you to actively participate in the democratic process in your neighborhood, school district, local city council, alderman district, and state and federal elections.

Challenge your children and grandchildren to research Black History online, and to visit the local library or bookstore to learn about Black excellence in religion, architecture, law, literature, music, dance, and the arts, including theater and film. Watch a Black History documentary or movie together as a family.

The removal of books by Black authors from schools or public libraries cannot stop us from learning and sharing our history. We can purchase books, download movies, and share our books. We can visit museums and art galleries that feature the work of Black artists. There are local parades and programs we can attend.

Remember: Black History is America’s History!
